American Commitment President Phil Kerpen released the following statement on the reported Virginia tax hike deal:
Richmond politicians have “compromised” between a sales tax hike and a gas tax hike by proposing to hike both taxes. Plus another built-in hike in the new wholesale gas tax from 3.5 percent to 5.1 percent after the fantasy of Internet sales taxes fails to materialize. Nearly half the sales tax hike won’t even go to transportation, and there is no guarantee that any of the tax hike will go to roads rather than more mass transit boondoggles. This deal is bad policy and bad politics and should be rejected by supporters of limited government, whowill be watching this vote closely and holding their delegates accountable come November.
